Week 1: Get to Know Your Camera

  • Learn about different camera types (DSLR, mirrorless, smartphones) and basic settings: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

  • Understand how lenses work and how to care for your camera.

Week 2: Master Composition

  • Discover the basics of framing your shots, including the rule of thirds, leading lines, and symmetry.

  • Explore how to use perspective and natural light to enhance your photos.

Week 3: Learn About Lighting

  • Dive into the difference between natural and artificial lighting, golden hour tips, and working with shadows.

  • Practice using basic tools like flash or lamps to manipulate light.

Week 4: Explore Color in Photography

  • Understand how colors create emotion in photos (e.g., warm tones for energy, cool tones for calm).

  • Learn how to work with light to influence colors and simplify palettes for stronger images.

    What to Bring:

  • Any camera you are comfortable using (DSLR, mirrorless, or smartphone). Make sure it’s charged and ready to use.
    (If using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, bring any lenses you have (a standard kit lens is fine).
  • Comfort Items:
    A notebook and pen for taking notes.
    Comfortable shoes for outdoor photography sessions.
    Water and snacks

Each session includes 45 minutes of guided instruction followed by 45 minutes of hands-on practice, allowing you to apply what you’ve learned.

About the Instructor: 
Sarah Payton is a 10 Year Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) with the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and over a decade of experience capturing life’s most meaningful moments. Her journey into photography began with a passion for bringing the images in her mind to life, capturing the in-between stories that make up our lives.
Specializing in wedding photography, corporate headshots, events, and press releases for more than 10 years, Sarah has recently shifted her focus to fine art and personalized home installations, where she blends her expertise with a deep love for storytelling. Drawn to contrast, noir, and clean aesthetics, her work highlights the beauty in simplicity and the power of subtle details.
In addition to her professional work, Sarah enjoys sharing her knowledge with aspiring photographers. Her teaching style is approachable and focused on helping students understand their cameras, explore creative techniques, and build confidence behind the lens.

When she’s not behind the camera or teaching, Sarah offers unique meditative art sessions, helping individuals express the emotions in their hearts and minds through photography.
